Neil
Wenberg, Harmony, Pa., topped the 12 players in the Indiana State and District 6
Checkers championship in Plainfield, Ind., the weekend of Aug. 23-24, 2008.
Earl Kennell, Roanoke, Ill., took third place with 17 and the title of District 6
Champion for the Illinois-Indiana-Michigan-Ohio district.
Top Indiana resident was Ed "Pal" Bucker, Mooresville,
Ind., with 15 points. Bucker, who is an enthusiast for checker history, took
custody of the historic Indiana Checker Champions' boards and also won a print
of Norman Rockwell's "Last Move" which was donated by checker museum curator
Don Deweber.
Deweber and Miss Becky, of Dubuque, Iowa,
visited the tournament, as did Jim Allen, Sellersburg, Ind., a veteran of 1970's
and 1980's Indiana tourneys; his nephew Mike Allen; and Phil Lucas, Greenwood,
Ind.
First-time Indiana competitors included Ed Lucas, Greenwood (father of Phil); Jim Lubbers, Evansville; and 9-year-old Alex Holmes, New Albany. Alex's father, the master Michael Holmes, was not able to come this time.
Missing this year was Brandon Like, Casey Goddard, Alan Millhone,
Alex Moiseyev and Michael Holmes, we hope next year you guys will be able to be
here again.
